Mass Media

The are a number of options available to students interested in a degree at Missouri State.

The Film Studies option is designed to teach students how to analyze film both aethetically and critically. Students who major in Film Studies usually plan to continue their education in graduate school or pursue a career as a film critic.

The Media Studies option is designed to teach students how to analyze many forms of media and to understand the impact and role of media on society. Students who major in Media Studies usually plan to continue their education in graduate school and further to pursue a career in academics.

The Media Operations option emphasizes the business end of mediated communication. In this major, students learn about radio and television programming, ratings, marketing and management. Students who graduate with this degree often seek careers in broadcast marketing and management.

The Media Production option is a comprehensive degree program that does not require an additional minor. Students learn how to use audio and video production equipment to create effective mediated messages. Students start with an introduction to media design and production, then move on to study intermediate and advanced production techniques in radio and television production. Most production majors pursue internships at radio or televion stations or commercial production companies.  Our media production facilities include and instructional television studio and an Internet-based radio studio.

The Digital Film Production option is also a comprehensive degree program that does not require an additional minor. In Digital Film Production a strong emphasis is placed on the creative aesthetic and storytelling dimensions of audio and video communication. As with the Media Production option, students start with an introduction to media design and production, but then move on to study intermediate and advanced production techniques in field audio, cinematography, editing, music recording, and surround sound post production. Our digital film production facilities include a surround and music recording studio, along with audio and video post production labs using industry standard Avid and Digidesign editing applications. Students shoot in high definition digital video, record audio using multichannel portable field recorders, and master their productions to Blu-Ray media. Students also have access to an extensive collection of lighting instruments, microphones, Steadicams, and a dolly required for high-end production work.
