Madame Bovary (1991)
DIRECTOR: Claude Chabrol
CAST: Jean-François Balmer; Christophe Malavoy; Jean Yanne; Lucas Belvaux;
SYNOPSIS
In
19th-century of France, Emma, the romantic daughter of a country squire, marries
a dull country doctor Charles Bovary. To escape boredom, she throws herself
into
love affairs wit ha suave local landowner and law student, and runs up ruinous
debts. This film version closely follows Flaubert's novel and includes most
of the famous scens, such as the wedding, the ball, the agricultural fair,
the operation on the clubfoot, and the opera in Rouen.
NOTE
Before this films, there're 7 other
film versions had been made. Notably, Jean Renoir's film in 1933, starred with
Valentine Tessier, and Vincente Minnelli's film in 1949, starred with Jeniffer
Jones. Chabrol had had long-time affection of making Madame Bovary, but never
tried to make it until he saw Isabelle play in "One Month in the Countryside".
The two had made two films by the time - Violette Noziere and Une Affaire de
Femmes. Madame Bovary appeared to be their next perfect project - all based
on the real stories, and about the women who are not satisfied. - FORUM
