La
Vie Moderne (2000)
DIRECTOR: Laurence Ferreira Barbosa
CAST: Frédéric Pierrot; Lolita Chammah
SYNOPSIS
3
unconnected stories take place in Paris within two days. Clair (Isabelle), a childless
woman from province, comes to see a sterile expert in Paris, where she saw an
old friend, whom she couldn't remember whether she slept with or not, and encounter
some other strangers; Marguerite, a teenage, can't get along with anybody, then
decides to dedicate herself to God;Jacques is unemployed and divorced, fighting
for the right of seeing his son. The only time that three characters meet is at
the end at a subway station.
NOTE
Isabelle
is very funny in this film. Her real daughter - Lolita Chammah - plays another
character - a teenager, who wants to dedicate herself to God.
It isn't the first
time that mother and daughter appeared in one movie, others like in "Une
affaire de femmes" and "Malina", but this times, Lolita first
time got real role. She ensembles Isabelle a lot - especially her eyes and mouth.
The
film also remind me a lot of her American"Amateur", made in New York
City. - FORUM

"Like a Puzzle",

March 1, 2000 I'd never written
a story for a particular actress, but I tried a little with the story of Claire,
because I much liked to work with Isabelle Huppert. But I didn't get there, I
couldn't imagine her for the character, so I continued to follow my inspiration.
I was very content, immediately, when she accepted this role, which had nothing
to prove her alliance with the character. Isabelle

"Isabelle
Huppert Devours Role After Role" by Joan Dupont International
Herald Tribune, May 20, 2000 at Cannes Lolita is great, she shows a
lot of strength in "La Vie Moderne". and she's funny, too. It was very
moving to me to act in the same film. We are completely different; she's not my
clone, not at all.
AWARD
Isabelle
brought the film to her film retrospect, held in Germany, along with her other
three films LouLou, Heaven's Gate, and Merci pour le Chocolat.
TRIVIA
The
director Barbosa audited many young girls for the role of Marguerite, but found
nobody ideal, until she met Lolita Chammah by occasion ..... at Isabelle's cousin's
home. She didn't know that Lolita was Isabelle's real daughter by then, but was
intrigued. However, she didn't propose the role to her immediately until a month
later, she was convinced by the fact that Lolita was taking some theater courses....
