SYNOPSIS
Jeanne Charming Killman (Isabelle),
an investigating magistrate, is in charge of disentangling
and
informing
a complex
business of misappropriation and embezzlements blaming the
president(François Berléand)
of a significant industrial group. Progressively with her investigations
and
interrogations,
she understands
that her capacity increases: the more she penetrates into the
secrets, the more pressure is increased. Meanwhile,
for the same reasons, her private life weakens. And soon
she is posed by two fundamental questions: to which extent,
can
she increase
this capacity within her own power? To which extent of the
human nature can she resist the intoxication of this capacity?

NOTE
s’inspire des péripéties
du scandale politico-financier ayant touché le groupe
pétrolier Elf-Aquitaine à partir de 1994. Révélant
un vaste réseau de corruption protégé par
la bienveillance du pouvoir exécutif, "l’Affaire
Elf" mêla ministres, affairistes, femmes vénales
et juges médiatiques. "Je ne cite jamais explicitement
le scandale Elf" a précisé Claude
Chabrol, "le film cherche à montrer jusqu’à quel
point une personne peut se sacrifier pour faire progresser
ce qui lui apparaît comme une mission. Ce personnage,
la juge d’instruction incarnée par Isabelle
Huppert, mettra tant d’implication dans l’affaire
qu’elle poussera son mari à l’exaspération
et à un geste extrême: se jeter par la fenêtre
depuis le second étage et se blesser".
51e long métrage du cinéaste
de 75 ans et sa 7e collaboration avec Isabelle Huppert (avec à la
clé un prix d’interprétation à Cannes
en 1978 pour Violette Noziere, et deux Volpi Cup à Venise
en 1988 pour Une affaire de femmes et en 1995 avec La Cérémonie),
L’Ivresse du pouvoir est une coproduction franco-allemande,
pilotée par Alicéléo avec la participation à hauteur
de 20% par les Berlinois d’Integral Film. Ayant bénéficié de
220 000 euros de soutien du fonds d'aide franco-allemand à la
coproduction, le film est vendu à l’international
par Wild Bunch et sortira dans les salles françaises
le 22 février 2006.

Frankly, I would
have had problem to make film without her. I do not see
any other actress would be able to play this kind
of strong brittleness that characterizes her. I like
her "small
woman who brawls" that has capability to touch me deeply.
Moreover, I knew that at any time Isabelle would not try to
plead her
cause to the spectators, but whom she would be perpetually
justified with respect to herself: she is accepted by assuming
her character without never cheating compared to the witness
- and it is what is so difficult to obtain in the actors.
Her
glasses are mauve, and her gloves as her hand bag ware red...
Isabelle even wanted that the film to be called The
Red Gloves. This title had the merit to evoke the fact
that
as from the
moment when one exerts a power against human beings, are

Her glasses,
rather original, reveal
a sign of assertion of oneself and a point of femininity.
She likes to be of representation, which returns to the
theatre of the device of hearing. Moreover, a well equipped
judge
is
more imagined a cop: contrary to the police officer,
the judge does not need anonymity and can allow himself to
be
quite identifiable.
He can affirm indices of his capacity and his certainty.
And then, a certain elegance gives Jeanne of the insurance
vis-a-vis

We have known each other since 14, and we've already worked
together in serval films, like The
School of Flesh by Benoît
Jacquot or Les Sæurs
Fâchnées by Alexandra
Leclere,
but this is the first time that we played face to face
and we worked
togehter in many major scenes. During working of court scenes,
we talked little about personnal things because Isabelle need
stay in a total concentration on her character and
that our complicity could have become the exercuse if difficult
confrontation... but at the time of the hospital, towards the
end of working, the tension is gone down again to a notch and
one started relax.

I liked very much to work with her. It was pleasure to watch
Isabelle and Claude at
work together and to be a witness of their complicity: she
called him "Vous" as if she respected
the "Pygmalion" pact between them. She at the same time remained
the distance and humour, as to show that the symbiosis between
them is constantly renewable.

TRIVIA
Chabrol wanted the film called
"La Comédie du Pouvoir", but the title was
taken by a novel of Françoise Giroud in 1977, So
Chabrol chose "L'Ivresse du Pouvoir".
