Prix d'Intepretation
at Cannes
5/20/2001

Prix and Award
No one is rewarded as much as she is

Isabelle is, probably, the most accomplished actress in the world. She has generally won every prestigious international film award, from Cannes, Venice, to Berlin, and many others in France, Europe and the world.

"For a long time, those international prix more represented to me than those Césars. Fortunately, however! I have won César very late (in end, all is relative!) and, in this domain, I more often lost than won. The fact of being more rewarded by foreign countries than my native - like no one prophecies in one's own country - shows also that I often wish to do films in vocation and the destiny has gone "far", in double perception of word! The Prix of Interpretation at Cannes for LA PIANISTE really pleased me. This was an immense performance. There was also a pride of having won for the second time. And then, it could be good to film - gave it a true legitimacy and brought a new lighting to it." (Studio Magazine, N° 181, September, 2002)

"For a certain period, it (for having not won any César Best Actress until 1996) touched me. But now, it's finished. I prefer to remain on this royal place with the limits. (Laughs). It's a question of destiny and it doesn't suffer me anymore." (Studio Magazine, N°91, October, 1994)

• CANNES International Film - France

Won
2001 for LA PIANISTE

"Some films frighten you. You think they take everything from you. They end up worthing all you give. I would like to thank Bach, Schubert and Mozart. My meeting with Michael Haneke a few years before was an intrusion. He was very European. This was a totally European story. I was in London while playing on the stage. He was in Vienna and telephoned me. A few hours later, he was there..... This was an extraordinary adventure, in which I was not alone. Annie Girardot, Benoit magimel...I'm very happy. Thanks to Liv Ullmman. The Prix is unusual. It is for my children." (at Cannes' Closing Ceremony, May 20, 2001)
