A fascinating and chilling account of the making of Werner Herzog's Classic, Fitzcarraldo. A film that was beset by a series of disasters while shooting in the Amazon. The film managed to get made despite problems that would have floored a less driven director. Herzog survives major casting problems, losing both Jason Robards (health) and Mick Jagger (other commitments) halfway through shooting. His production gets caught up in a war between Peru and Ecuador, and he faces the inevitable problems of weather and crew morale. Filmmaker Les Blank has made a compelling film about an obsessed genius, the creative process, and the iron will it takes to make an independent feature film.
